Required documents:   Valid MT Drivers License or State I.D. and proof of weapons training, which may include one of the following:

Eligibility Requirements To apply, you must:

  • Have been a Montana resident for at least six (6) months, and
  • Currently reside in Flathead County.

Application & Renewal Walk-In Hours

  • Standard applications or renewals: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
  • Enhanced applications or renewals: Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Application Locations & Notes

  • Enhanced permit applications (new or renewal) are accepted in the office only (online option may be added in the future).
  • All applications must be signed in person in front of the Sheriff or a designee.
  • Appointments can be scheduled by calling (406) 758-5585.

Fees (Cash or check only – no other payment methods accepted)

Standard Permit

  • New or expired more than 30 days: $50
  • Renewal (within 90 days before expiration or up to 30 days after): $25
  • Military (with proof) – New or expired more than 30 days: $25
  • Military (with proof) – Renewal (within 90 days before expiration or up to 30 days after): $15

Enhanced Permit

  • New or renewal: $75

Required Documents for Enhanced Permits

  • Valid Montana ID
  • Live fire weapons training certificate qualifying under MCA 45-8-312

*Renewal:  A Flathead County CWP is eligible for renewal ONLY if presented 90 days prior or up to 30 days after the expiration date. A permit cannot be renewed any earlier than within the 90 days prior to the expiration date, and if presented for renewal outside of the renewal period, a new permit application and full $50.00 fee will be required.
